Lessons from college

Many people don’t realize this, but when you first set off to college for your freshman year there are so many things that you end up learning about yourself and others.

During my first year living on campus I thought that I knew what I liked and what I didn’t like since I lived with other siblings back at home, however living in a tiny dorm with a stranger really opened my eyes to things.

My first roommate ever was a seemingly sweet girl named Linda. At first I thought that me and Linda were going to be good friends that stayed in contact even after college was over, however when the first heat wave hit our town and we had our first argument about the air conditioning settings I could tell that she wasn’t as sweet as I thought. I have never been a fan of air conditioning unless it is truly needed like in situations like the one that we were in. Therefore I was more than willing to have the air conditioning running at a medium setting, however Linda wanted to have the air conditioning running at the highest setting for the rest of the evening. When I tried to talk to her about this and see if we could come to a mutual agreement she ended up going on a 5-minute tangent about how annoying I was and that I better drop it “or else”. While it wasn’t a gracious way of doing it, her tactic certainly got me to back off for the rest of the day. Once the semester over I was lucky enough to be able to move to a different dorm and have a less controlling roommate. I may have my preferences about air conditioning, but I will never live somewhere where I might get beaten up if I don’t succumb to the preferences of others like I could have with Linda!
