When we decided to visit abroad we knew that we would have to be open minded when it came to some things. The language barrier was nothing compared to the fact that food, lodging, and driving were completely foreign to us. I have always been a picky eater to begin with so Bangers and Mash were not something that appealed to me and neither was the fact that all the beer was served warm. European countries have very different cultural traditions and some of them made us downright uncomfortable. One thing that we learned along the way was the fact that “cooling system”, meant a totally different thing to many. Several of the places that we stayed provided portable fans or ceiling fans as their form of cooling instead of the air conditioning that we were accustomed to. In fact, one of them had small bungalows with no windows at all because they wanted their guest to feel the fresh breeze. I guess we should have researched better before booking some of our accommodations. Sightseeing was great and we were able to see many places with breathtaking views. We feel that the experience, on a whole, was well worth the money spent but we were also happy to get back home where our HVAC system keeps us comfortable with perfect temperatures. I will never take having a full HVAC system for granted that is for sure. I will also never book a trip without verifying that they have actual heat and air conditioning where we will be staying. Lesson learned for sure!
